Opening Night is Here at Last!
Through the blood, through the mud, through the sweat, through the bile, through the scars, through the tears ... bonded makes its debut for world. Those of you who know me, know how I have labored over this play through the years. I was working on this play when I started having carpal tunnel issues. It was this play that would wake me in the middle of the night to the sound of voices crying out, wanting to be heard. And then, after the bulk of the re-writing and re-writing, it has been one helluva rehearsal process. I guess you can't create good theatre without first having a little drama. Through it all, this baby has stood proud, refusing to die, and forcing me to keep on tellin' tellin' -- tellin' it like it is / was / should be. Whatever faults lie in the work are my own. It's now time to step back and let the audience receive what they will. I have been blessed to have had this opportunity to work with such a talented, respected, and hard-working group of people; each of whom have taken on the challenge of making this their own. Whatever happens, whatever ever people say after they see this play, or even whether they show up or not, I know that my life has been changed by going through this process. I may not know where to next, but I do know wherever I end up, it simply cannot / will not/ must not be the same. I wouldn't be completely honest if I didn't admit that I am scared out of my mind. I haven't had a good night's sleep in weeks. Anxiety be gone! We got a show to do. Thank you to Daniele Watts, Will Gough, Curtis Scott, and Wynton McCurdy who were the first to inhabit the roles of Lily, Sonny, Asa, and Jack. And now thank you to Toyin Moses, Terrence Colby Clemons, Eric B. Anthony, and Carl Crudup who are now taking on the mantles, taking on the world. Theatre can beautiful thing. More than just entertainment, it is spiritual practice where lives can be impacted-- not just for the audiences, but especially for (we) creators ourselves.

Where has the time gone?
I have had the privilege of working with an amazing group of actors and an amazing director. Things have been so hectic, that I haven't had the time to post here like I would have wanted. In the words of Stephen Sondheim, "Art isn't easy." How true that is!! And we open next week!! Wow. Wow. Wow.
